Can you give us a brief overview of your progression as a Respiratory Physiologist?

I started working with Zak as a Band 4 Respiratory Physiologist in 2020, and with Zak’s support, I’m now working as an experienced Band 8.

After university, I started my career in healthcare as a trainee physiologist. My duties included learning how to conduct respiratory and sleep diagnostics. I also used CPAP machines on patients during the COVID-19 pandemic to keep their airways open and ensure effective ventilation. Throughout this period, we were exposed to several challenges requiring novel methods of doing things, such as performing testing outdoors in a drive-through clinic on hospital grounds.

I started working with Your World Healthcare to challenge myself and advance my career. Zak Nerurkar was, and still is, fantastic in consistently finding me locum roles that were well-suited to my abilities and offered the right level of challenge. Through these roles, I was able to develop my skills and knowledge within the healthcare industry.

I managed respiratory lists in understaffed hospitals during the COVID pandemic, worked with the sleep and ventilation team at the prestigious Royal Brompton Hospital, assisted at private hospitals on Harley Street, and helped set up and train staff at one of the best-performing NHS Community Diagnostic Centres in the country.

These experiences provided me with invaluable knowledge across various healthcare specialties, including sleep, ventilation, imaging, respiratory, and cardiology. As a result, Your World supported me in successfully assuming Respiratory Physiologist management roles at a Band 8 level.

Alongside this, I have fulfilled my dream of getting a place at medical school with an unconditional offer from Oxford University on their Accelerated Graduate-Entry Medicine Programme. I am looking to research chronic pain and aim to use AI and Machine Learning to improve the future of people suffering from this condition while combining my physiology knowledge as a doctor and anaesthetist.

How would you describe your working relationship with your consultant, Zak?

Zak is more like a friend than a consultant. He always goes out of his way to help me where he can, even when it means answering the phone when I’m starting a new locum placement at a hospital first thing on a Sunday morning. He consistently secures the best Respiratory Physiologist roles for me at the best rates and has helped me easily navigate challenging situations. In short, Your World Healthcare and Zak have helped make my exciting career plans more possible.

How has Your World supported your professional development?

Your World has connected me with a wide variety of Respiratory Physiology work. Zak has always been the first to let me know about new and exciting locum roles that are challenging and well-suited to my skillset.

I have also developed links to well over a dozen hospitals and an even greater number of departments, which have given me not only great experiences but also several wonderful colleagues who have become friends.

Why have you chosen and stayed working with Your World Recruitment?

In addition to great service from the Clinical Physiology and Compliance team, Your World has consistently offered the best rates compared to other agencies. Furthermore, the team value my best interests over a quick deal and always encourages me to do the right thing for my personal life and career.

What advice would you give to new Respiratory Physiologists working with Your World?

I would advise new physiologists to keep learning, consistently take on new challenges, and approach every challenge and role positively. Think about what you want to improve most about patient care or a workplace; think about what most interests you and try to work towards it. If you are interested in a specific area, there will be less competition than you feel if you direct your fully focused energy towards achieving it.
