Job Purpose
The Accredited Clinical Coding Analyst is responsible for accurately translating clinical information from patient records into ICD-10 and OPCS-4 codes to support data quality, clinical governance and Trust income under the Payment by Results (PbR) framework.
The role requires specialist knowledge of clinical coding standards, anatomy, physiology and medical terminology, alongside the ability to mentor junior coders and maintain high standards of coding accuracy and productivity.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyse and code inpatient and outpatient clinical records using ICD-10 and OPCS-4 classifications.
- Maintain coding accuracy standards of 90–95% and meet productivity targets.
- Ensure coding is completed within Trust and PbR deadlines.
- Raise and resolve complex coding queries with clinicians and healthcare teams.
- Support, mentor and audit novice coders to aid development and ACC exam preparation.
- Participate in coding audits, quality assurance and service improvement initiatives.
- Maintain compliance with NHS coding standards, Trust policies and Information Governance requirements.
- Use Trust systems including Medicode and Electronic Patient Records (EPR).
Qualifications
- Accredited Clinical Coder (ACC) qualification.
- NHSCS Foundation Course completion.
- Evidence of refresher and specialist coding training.
Experience & Skills
- Extensive NHS clinical coding experience.
- Strong knowledge of ICD-10, OPCS-4, anatomy and medical terminology.
- Excellent analytical, communication and IT skills.
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
- Experience mentoring or supporting junior staff.
