Assistant Director of Finance

Pay Rates: £42 per hour PAYE inclusive of holiday pay / £46 per hour Umbrella
Hours / Working Days: 37.5 hours per week / Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm

An experienced senior finance leader is required to oversee financial management, strategic planning and performance across a large healthcare organisation. The postholder will work closely with the Director of Finance to produce financial strategies, develop long-term financial plans and support key decision-making at Executive level. This role is responsible for ensuring robust financial controls, delivering monthly financial reporting, leading budget planning, and managing relationships with senior stakeholders and commissioners.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the development and delivery of a comprehensive financial strategy and associated annual budget planning process.
- Provide expert business and financial advice to Directors, Senior Operational Managers and Budget Holders.
- Oversee monthly financial performance, including forecasting, variance analysis, risk assessment and Value for Money measures.
- Develop and monitor the Capital Investment Strategy, ensuring accurate costing and financial appraisal of business cases.
- Lead on costing models, financial frameworks and budget setting to support strategic plans, recovery plans and efficiency programmes.
- Manage financial performance indicators, benchmarking and efficiency programmes across the organisation.
- Develop, implement and maintain devolved budgetary control and reporting processes.
- Represent finance in strategic meetings and deputise for the Director of Finance where required.
- Provide leadership to finance teams, promoting high standards of governance, training and professional development across the directorate.
Essential Requirements:
- Fully qualified accountant (CCAB or CIMA) with a minimum of 3 years post-qualification experience in a senior financial management role within a large, complex organisation.
- Proven track record of delivering financial management programmes and meeting key performance targets.
- Experienced in financial reporting, budget management, stakeholder engagement and strategic planning.
- Demonstrable leadership skills, with experience developing staff capability and supporting organisational improvement.
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to evaluate risk and influence financial decision-making at Executive level.
