This position is suitable for a qualified Mortuary APT Redhill/Chertsey to apply on a locum basis to start as a locum with a pay of £33 P/H.

Mortuary Anatomical Pathology Technician
1.0 Role Summary
To be responsible to, deputise and assist the Chief APT in the Operational Management and Technical Direction of the Trust Mortuary Services and Post Mortem Room, provided at the sites detailed above.
To be responsible to the Chief APT for liaising with the Coroner’s Office and the Police, with the purpose of ensuring an efficient Coronial Service that meets all legal requirements.
To be responsible to the Chief APT, for the efficient operation of the visiting Forensic Pathology Service.
To be responsible to the Chief APT, for the implementation of Clinical Policy, as it pertains to the Trust Mortuary Service and specifically within the Post Mortem Room.
To deputise and assist the Chief APT for the 24 hour delivery of appropriate Mortuary Services, using whatever rota patterns and staff groups, necessary to achieve this within the principle of unit cost minimisation.
To undertake other duties on the instruction of the Chief APT, that are in keeping with grade and status of this post.
2.0 Main Duties
2.1 Operational Management
In conjunction with the Chief APT ensure that all aspects of the Mortuary Service are carried out in accordance with Trust and Pathology specific policies and standing operating procedures (SOP’s) and the provisions of the Human Tissue Act.
When requested to seek consent from Next of Kin for the removal of deceased tissue for transplantation i.e. cornea as required.
To liaise closely with respective transplant teams to co-ordinate the collection of tissue, where consent has been appropriately given in line with Human Tissue Act guidelines
To deputise and assist the Chief APT to ensure at all times that policies in relation to the identification of patients are enacted and that storage facilities are check each day to ensure the hygienic and safe storage of bodies until removal by authorised people.
To apply the expert knowledge, expected of a Senior Anatomical Pathology Technician, to the preparation of bodies for Post Mortem and support the responsible Consultant Histopathologist in the delivery of high standard Post Mortem services.
To ensure the appropriate management of specimens collected at Post Mortem, that is; collection, labelling, safe handling, storage and transportation.
To co-ordinate the collection of Photographic and Radiographic evidence as instructed by the Consultant Histopathologists.
To liase closely with the Police and Coroner’s Office to ensure the efficient operation of the coronial service.
To liase closely with the Patient Affairs Officer to facilitate the sensitive and supportive handling of Next of Kin, in particular the management of viewings of deceased.
To lease closely with funeral directors to ensure the efficient and effective management of bodies.
To liase closely with the Obstetrics Department with regards to the sensitive handling foetal material.
2.2 Human Resource Management
To deputise for the Chief APT managing the Mortuary personnel in line with the Trust’s Human Resources policies.
To assist the Chief APT on the recruitment, selection and appointment of Mortuary personnel, in line with global pathology establishment policy.
Training and Development
In conjunction with the Chief APT, identify and develop a training plan with the aim of supporting the personal development of Mortuary personnel.
To develop training logs for all Mortuary staff, identify areas required and deliver training to junior members of staff.
Demonstrate techniques and procedures to multi-disciplinary staff including Nursing, Police and Medical as part of their training process.
2.4 Financial Management
In conjunction with the Chief APT, act in compliance with Trust Standing Financial Instructions, when executing all financial transactions.
To support the Chief APT in the effective management of the Mortuary Department’s budget.
2.5 Information Management
In conjunction with the Pathology Information Systems and Technology Manager, ensure the safe and effective operation of the Laboratory Information System (LIMS) and other related systems, as they apply to the Mortuary Service, in a manner that supports Pathology’s guiding principles for the operation of the LIMS and related systems.
To assist the Chief APT, ensuring that operational management systems within the Mortuary Service, support the capture and meaningful retrieval of essential Management Information i.e. Turnaround Times, Workload Statistics and Costing Information, in a timely manner.
2.6 Quality Management
In conjunction with the Chief APT, assist in the establishment and effective operation of the Pathology Quality Management System.
In conjunction with the Chief APT, assist in ensuring compliance with Clinical Pathology Accreditation UK Ltd (CPA) standards.
In conjunction with the Chief APT, assist in the implementation of the Trust’s Risk Management Strategy.
In conjunction with the Chief APT, support the operation of all forms of Audit within the Trust.
Support the Chief APT in conjunction with and relevant Clinical Leads, for the; Identification, Evaluation and Implementation of National Guidelines i.e. NICE, National Service Frameworks, Royal College Guidelines and Pathology Modernisation.
- Health and Safety
In conjunction with the Chief APT and the Pathology Quality, Health and Safety Manager, assist in the implementation of Trust Health and Safety policy, as it applies to the Mortuary Service.
Ensure correct disinfection and sterilisation of equipment.
2.8 Security
To be responsible to the Chief APT for the implementation of the Trust security policy, within Mortuary, as it applies to; Patients, Patient Data, Patient Effects, Equipment and Trust Personnel.
2.9 Service Planning
To assist the Chief APT in the; identification, evaluation and implementation of new technologies, as they apply to continuous improvement within the Mortuary Service.
In conjunction with the Chief APT, contribute to the development of a Mortuary Service Improvement Plan.
Other Duties
